The formalities to be completed are not the same depending on whether you are importing goods from a country within the European Union or from a country outside the European Union.
Within the European common market, you can benefit from a harmonisation of the various formalities to be completed to import and export goods. This represents a definite advantage for companies who do not need to worry about possible specific rules applicable in the exporting country.
If you choose a supplier based in a country outside the European Union, you should also take into account any import rules and customs restrictions applicable in that country.

To best negotiate prices on imported products and control your company's finances, you need to be able to know the different costs you will have to pay to import goods.
Thanks to the common economic market applicable within the European Union, it will be easier for you to know in advance the various costs you will have to pay when importing goods from the European Union.
However, the situation becomes more complicated when importing products from countries outside the European Union.
To anticipate the costs to be paid at the time of import, you can use the online service of the community and national customs tariff, otherwise known as RITA for integrated automated tariff reference.
This online service lists all the information concerning the regulations and taxation of products that you can import from a country outside the European Union.
Once on this online service, all you have to do is enter the nomenclature of your product with its place of origin and date of import. This will allow you to anticipate the different taxes that you will have to pay, in order to better negotiate prices with your supplier.
You can also get an overview of the regulations applicable to your product, in particular concerning phytosanitary standards or possible import restrictions applicable in that country.

You must pay VAT in the country where the product is sold. Import duties, on the other hand, are paid when the products enter the customs territory of the EU. For example, if the product arrives first in the Netherlands before reaching its final destination in France, import duties will be paid in the Netherlands, but VAT will be due in France.
